The Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition (KRob) is the longest running currently active architectural drawing competition in the world. For this year’s 39th annual competition, PLA’s own Alex Hogrefe (also of www.alexhogrefe.com) was asked to sit on the jury along with fellow representation and visualization experts such as architect and University of Michigan Associate Professor Perry Kulper and sci-fi and fantasy artist Stephan Martiniere. I had a chance to ask Alex about his experience and overall impressions of this year’s competition:

“The jurors for the competition all brought to the table a unique set of criteria for judging, which I found challenging and exciting to work with. There were over 400 entries this year, and each one very different from the next. I think overall the chosen winners from each category represented the broad range of styles that were submitted. Having followed this competition for the last several years, it’s easy to see that the quality and diversity of work being submitted is growing. This year showed an increasing amount of submissions from outside of the United States. It is an exciting time in architectural visualization and this competition provides an opportunity for artists to let their stuff be seen.

It’s rare to meet and spend time with other highly recognized architectural visualizers such as Perry Kulper and Stephan Martiniere. This allowed me to ask a lot of questions and understand their workflows and thinking process. Experiences like these allow for me to keep growing as an architectural visualizer. They keep me up to date with the latest techniques and workflows happening in visualization. These techniques I can then bring back to the office where I can begin to investigate ways to integrate them into future studies and presentations.”
