PLA was recently awarded second place in the “Small Lots / BIG IDEAS” competition in Northampton, MA. The competition was sponsored by the town’s planning department and called for design solutions well suited for a narrow site not far from Smith College. The Town will make the land available to residents that will build one of the submitted design proposals.

Our submission, the “PV+ House” is a prototypical house based on an open plan design found in both the classic New England barn and the New York loft. The 24 by 42 feet footprint providing a compact yet spacious 2,000 SF house. It is also a Zero Energy or Energy Plus house depending on the specs on the solar system and other features.

This barn-like structure is very flexible, and provides a wide range of plan interpretations. Core services are located on the north wall and can be expanded so as to allow the kitchen or master bath to be enlarged.

To find out more information about the competition and the other submissions head on over to the Northampton Planning website.

Alex Hogrefe, Matt Uminski , Bohseung Kong and Paul Lukez were members of the design team.
