Over the last few weeks PLA has had the fantastic opportunity to get involved with Nitsch Engineering and the City of Boston to visualize exciting changes coming to the streetscape of Dorchester. Newly-elected Mayor Marty Walsh had the first groundbreaking of his term today, flanked by PLA renderings depicting the design for a new street improvement project at Upham’s Corner.
Located in Dorchester, Upham’s Corner is the site of several historic landmarks, including the Strand Theater, Masonic Hall, Pilgrim Congregational Church, and many gorgeous, historic brick storefronts. Despite the many architectural treasures here, the streetscape at Upham’s Corner has slowly fallen into disrepair and desperately needs attention. Given Mayor Walsh’s ties to Dorchester, it is a fitting project to kick off early in his first term.
The goal of the project is to enhance safety along Columbia Street and to establish Upham’s Corner as a premier cultural destination in Northern Dorchester, while serving to revitalize the local economy. Changes to the street will include redesigned sidewalks and crosswalks as well as new lamp posts, street trees, way-finding, seating, and traffic signals.
The street improvement project is being led by Boston Commissioner of Public Works Michael Dennehy and designed by Nitsch Engineering and Copley Wolff Design Group of Boston.
PLA was honored to produce visualizations of the upcoming project for Mayor Walsh’s groundbreaking presentation today. See the renderings and images of PLA at the Mayor’s presentation below.
